Is Barack Obama exaggerating with $85 gas tank comment?

Geschrieben in Barack Obama, Chris Matthews von Boris am 2 April 2008

Who is out of touch here? On his show Hardball on MSNBC, Chris Matthews suggested that Barack Obama was exaggerating when he told a crowd at a campaign event ”I got an email from a friend of mine; it says, just in case you’re not living in the real world, being driven around by Secret Service, it just cost me $85 to fill up my tank.”

Matthews’ comment: ”That’s a hell of a big tank, even in today’s prices. Eighty-five dollars? What is that?”

Of course Matthews was implying that Obama is indeed out of touch with reality since there is no such thing as a tank of gas worth $85.

Just for the record, any decent size SUV has a gas tank of around 25 gallons. Multiply that by $3.29 per gallon (current national average) and your at $82.25. Not too far off. So who’s out of touch here?
